The Rubbish Society
The Rubbish Society

Having speculated on the good society in the last entry I should list some elements of the rubbish one, i.e. ours currently.
•Too cynical.
•Feminism for dummies. I’m no apologist for masculinity but there’s an anti-male feeling around which isn’t healthy. The fact that it may be well justified is no help.
•Feelings of fear of too many things especially by families obsessed with the welfare of children.
•Domination of dumb pop culture: music, film, soaps, reality TV, glossy mags, celebrities.
•Contempt for being serious. Tendency for everything to descend into irony and humour.
•Lowering of value standards. In art everything must be easy and immediately accessible otherwise no exposure. In relationships commonality is diminished. In morality be self-interested and shameless about it. Where possible duck responsibility.
•Rampant consumerism. The need for material comfort has become an over-zealous dash to have things way more than what is needed. Stuff for the sake of stuff.
