Against Motherhood
Against Motherhood

It seems sacrilege to say it but I’ve never been much of a fan of motherhood. Although I had a caring and committed mother I’ve always felt a wee bit suspicious of mothering and the high moral status that is accorded them.
I feel that in relationship terms, the mother/child dynamic is hardly reciprocal. It has too much of narcissism and dependency about it which ultimately hampers any good connection. Unless this can be got beyond and something better established in later years, then the relationship between a mother and a child remains stuck in infancy, not in any way a model for how a relationship should be no matter how strong the primal bond.
