India Knight writes in the Sunday Times in her typically sniffy manner but is agreeable none the less.
She’s appalled by ITV’s freakish new series, Club Reps. It follows Club 18-30 staff in Falaraki in Rhodes (been there). Her contempt is to do with the combination of “tits, arses, sick and sex” all at the same time. And partly because it confirms her suspicion that there is a generation of young adults who live their lives in a complete moral and intellectual vacuum.
She says they are all quite unbelievably stupid: “All of them, men and women, have those thick, inbred faces usually accessorised with cheap fags and a Rottweiler. They are also unbelievably hedonistic in the coarsest sense of the word, not intelligent enough to be decadent or knowing enough that there are more entertaining ways of being hedonistic than flashing your tits or sicking up on your own feet.”
Sometimes you need to turn to the conservative types like Knight to get a proper expression of the contempt you feel for certain sectors of society. The prevalent dumbness of the world as increasingly depicted on television is alarming to those with even the slightest sense of elevated value or intelligence. You don’t need to be a snob or a party-pooper to be offended by the likes of Club Reps. Much as I don’t often like her take on things, I am glad for Knight’s words here.
