MUSIC CERTAINTY
My association with music is autonomous. I don’t need my tastes always confirmed by others for them to be meaningful. Of course it’s nice when they are but generally it’s a direct one-to-one connection for me. In this I am confident and self-sufficient. Few other things in life come with such certainty.
NOWHERE MAN
I come from a background of people who, in general, lacked confidence. Among them were life’s losers, those with low esteem, low expectation, almost no vision or creativity. The town I was brought up in was a working class ‘geez-a-job’ kinda place. In this context I was exceptional and liked that. In this context anyone who achieved anything outside of convention was exceptional. Among the exceptional however I am nowhere, an irrelevance, hardly even at first base.
ANOTHER ANALOGY
I’m like a radio station not quite tuned in. I’m only the tiniest degree off the mark but enough not to get it. What’s there seems good, maybe even more than good at times. But it’s useless because you can’t hear it properly. It’s all fuzzy and unclear. May as well not be there at all.
UNCOOL
Something doesn’t have to be cool to be good. There’s too much cool around these days anyway. It’s so mainstream now that cool isn’t cool any more.
