Cosmic Consciousness
Cosmic Consciousness

It feels as if there exists a stratum of human experience akin to a cosmic consciousness. Such an entity isn’t spatially extended with any kind of physical reality. It is nothing like a deity or a creator of the world. Transcendent would be the the right description.
It is thus tempting to be mythical, to suggest that this consciousness acts like a force which has implanted itself into carbon resulting in sentient beings like us having self-awareness and powers of reflection. Then our purpose might be to gather information as if individual minds work like probes reporting what they see.
Philosophically, this is a kind of dualism. The material universe and its brute facts exist independently of thought but everything in that universe is mute. Then consciousness comes along. Consciousness with its values-based ontology wants to know what is going on. This would be our job and purpose, the meaning of life. Whether values are only a by-product, an epiphenomenon, just a tool to get through, like nutrition to an organism, or whether values are in some way a direct reflection of the cosmic source will have to wait till another day when I can summon some more nonsense speculation.
