It’s annoying that significant events, the ones that define a life, seldom come from your own initiative. They are usually events that issue in an unintended way, like a by-product of a situation you’ve found yourself in.
It’s a bummer in that it can feel like no matter how hard you try your efforts don’t seem to make much of a difference. Yet if you don’t try then nothing, not even the unintended is going to happen.
So you go forward in your contrived notions and alongside that are the actual events that make the difference as if unconnected. A strange phenomenon. Just like John Lennon said.
