Questions Are Loaded
Questions Are Loaded
Saturday, 5 June 2004
Is there ever a question asked whether in examination or in a law court where the answer given doesn’t have its meaning distorted by the questioner’s agenda? In other words: are questions always loaded?
There’s a pretence that suggests they are not, that suggests objective, value-free questions are possible. They rarely are. Questions are seldom neutral and so answers are to some extent already prejudged. If you are fully appraised of the spin of the question then perhaps you have an advantage.
On the other hand being ignorant of the context within which the question is asked might make for some interesting responses: different, possibly lateral, maybe creative. But just as easily an answer unaware of the loaded question might be misleading or misconstrued to a person’s disadvantage.
