"Men are stupid that way" said India Knight in The Sunday Times referring to some further example of idiot maleness.
I get a bit annoyed at that pseudo-feminist sniping at men. As a guy I'm no lover of masculinity but it's not clever to perpetuate the kind of fashionable sexism Knight likes to dish out.
She thinks that a man seeking an existence free from family life is an example of middle-youth regression. Not always. It may very well be a perfectly healthy impulse to free oneself from the neurotic madness that families often are.
Also, many women bag a man to service their agenda and sometimes do so ruthlessly dumping the man (emotionally and otherwise) after he has performed. That's probably acceptable to contemporary femininity but it's a rubbish deal for a guy. Fair enough, if he signs up he needs to go with it. Better not to sign up at all I would say. I certainly never did and have no regrets.
Some months later in The Guardian Dr Pam Spurr wrote:
“I have spoken to a fair few thirty-something women who settle down with a “decent chap” knowing that he’ll make a good father. On producing babies, though, many such men find themselves left out in the cold when they still desire the sexual warmth that they initially enjoyed. Such complete sexual pragmatism seems fair to these women, but what about the men? To them, sexually, men don’t seem to matter much once they have served their purpose.”
