In an emotionally illiterate world, art and religion fill the void.
Although great works and achievements have been furthered for religious and artistic ends I think that in general these achievements are born out of inadequacies in the psychological make-up of humans.
Art and religion become objectifiers of inner disturbance as well as attempts at alleviation. Just as often as they might help they also aggravate the situation by sublimating these root inadequacies.
