Fusion
I once heard Chic Corea's music described as criminal. That's an indicator of where jazz-rock sits on the credibility spectrum - just a notch above prog and Mr Blobby. Those involved are now almost expected to apologise and atone for their crimes. Was that why Kevin Fitz when I met him years later told me this was the only piece he had ever written in the style?
Yet jazz and rock fusions represent a great adventure in musical swordsman-ship. They are in the long tradition of virtuosity as Hendrix, Clapton and Jimmy Page were. Pompous and indulgent sure, but is there a music-kind that isn’t? You can bet that further down the line some kids will rediscover the fusion-istas and put them back on the map. Even Yes!
Kevin played keyboards with Nigel Clark on guitar and John O'Neil* on drums. Cheers, guys. Hope you don’t feel remotely apologetic.
*John had been with Chou Pahrot who did a jazz-punk kind of thing. I think they escaped sentencing due to being punk compatible but I’d have to check.
