Commercial Flip
They say an artist should please himself. Truth is, if he doesn't please other people he won't be an artist long. I was trying to please others in 2000 when I was part of a production company trying for commercial success.
Over the period I sketched dozens of rough tracks deliberately aiming at what was selling at the time. These here are three from the pack. There's a two-step thing (Artful Dodger), a pop thing (Atomic Kitten), and a dance thing (S-Club).
My timing was bad as ever. Napster was catching on and Steve Jobs would shortly step forward with an ipod. The face of commercial music was about to be radically altered. Soon enough the record business and me would for once have something in common: the fight for survival.
