AWB
For a bunch of Scottish guys the Average White Band had serious soul. The white album from 1974 was one of the finest in the genre: classic songs, brilliantly performed and beautifully produced by the great Arif Mardin. It’s interesting too that a band with two outstanding singers had its biggest hit with an instrumental (Pick Up The Pieces).
I recorded AWB for broadcast at the Glasgow Apollo. Multi-tracked then mixed later, we would also have taken a live stereo feed as back-up and somehow that tape found its way into my collection. These three songs are from it. The mix is rough and the tape a bit worse for wear having lived in a box for the last thirty years but the vibe is as fresh and strong as it was on that summer night back in 1982.
