Entrepreneur
No history of the Ayrshire music scene would be complete without a nod to Bob Wyper. Although a performer of some note it was his entrepreneurial bent that stood him apart. In a community deeply risk-averse to the arts Bob would throw aside caution and have a go.
In the early 80s he put out the Overtone albums, a series of compilation records which were recorded in our studio. Pulling such a thing together in itself is no small feat and deserving of credit. To do so and produce quality work is praise-worthy indeed. And that is what is striking hearing these albums again: their caliber. Even the production is respectable given that each song would have been recorded and mixed in a couple of hours.
The three examples here are a reflection of the raw talent pool in Scotland at the time. These bands never achieved recognition but might have with a simple twist of providence. Which points up yet again that for all the winners in the record biz there was always a stream of also-rans who could just as easily have been the success story. Bob Wyper was their entrepreneurial equivalent.
