The Average White Band could. But they were nothing like your average white band. In early 70s West of Scotland you were more likely to be a long-haired pub rocker. Colin and I inhabited that pub world but our ultra-white skins didn't stop us from having black idols. Earth Wind & Fire and Stevie Wonder felt just as native as Floyd, Zeppelin and Bowie.

That era was a gold-mine for popular music and a great time to be coming of age. All kinds of interesting fusions gave rise to entire new genres. Going back to these eclectic roots was the motivation for this song. Let's do a funk thing became Move On. Maybe white guys can't funk but they can have fun trying.
